From the rock guitar intro of the title track to the final note, the “NRG” of this young trio is remarkable. Singing positively through pop-driven tunes, they’re the Disneyfied Christian trio that you’d let your kids listen to, dancing along. “Any Which Way” is confessional pop-rock, recognizing that they often forget God’s plans, but want God to know that they’re still paying attention. Honestly, without their pictures in front of me as I listened, the depth/content doesn’t necessarily jive with their average age of 14. Dealing with the superficiality with which we encounter others, the band tackles “Like” as it pertains to high school. Covered by Marvin Gaye and later Diana Ross, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” works pretty well as a love song from God to us, as re-done by this crowd. They tackle Nicole C. Mullen’s “Call on Jesus” next, and later the song Dionne Warwick made famous, “That’s What Friends Are For.” There are upbeat, inspiration tunes like “Girls Can Change The World” and “Get Up,” and the God-directed ode, “Inside Out,” might be their finest. All in all, it’s safe, happy, upbeat pop, and pre-teens everywhere will be hearing them on the airwaves and on television. It’s pure… say it with me… NRG.
